About the Collective
Our Purpose
We work with neighbors, kids, creatives, and anyone hungry to make something real,
to create a shared space for art to be made, shown, taught, and lived,
because we believe in growing beauty where we are, making noise where we’ve been quiet, and lifting each other through creative work.
Our People
We are here for young artists, budding creatives, curious learners, art educators, supportive families, and anyone who believes in the transformative power of the arts.
Our programs are designed to uplift K–12 students, emerging creators, and community members in and around our hometown of Aledo who may not otherwise have access to robust creative opportunities.
The Story Behind the MC Art Collective
Myah Balmer, MC Art Collective Co-Founder
It all began about 10 years ago when I stepped into the classroom as a volunteer art-on-a-cart teacher. My daughter, only in 2nd grade, found herself in an artless world when the elementary school’s art teacher moved on abruptly. In those tender, formative years, where creativity should flow freely, her generation was left without a creative outlet—an art desert in the midst of their most expressive years.
I couldn’t let this stand. So we took action—together. We raised funds, gathered donations, and built a cart that would carry not just supplies, but the very spirit of creation from class to class. The cart became a vessel of art esteem, a symbol of possibility. I remember the moments that still resonate—when a student would hesitate, saying, “Miss Myah, I just can’t…” And I’d smile and say, “OK, so show me. Show me how you can’t—I want to see.” Their eyes would lift, a smile would spread across their face, and the weight of doubt would vanish. Like a spark, they’d dive into the world of creation, and nothing could hold them back.
Years passed, and those same children—who once smiled up at me with hesitant eyes—had grown into young adults. But as they started the high school climb to their senior year, they found themselves again in the same desert, facing the same void amidst the pandemic. The silence returned. Yet, something had changed. They were no longer the hesitant children I had once met—they were artists in the making, and they were ready to take the next step.
And so, the seed of something new was planted. During the isolation of the COVID-19 lockdown, I turned inward, knowing I had to do something to keep that light alive. The dream I had long carried—a show, a scholarship, a way to honor art the way all artists once needed—became clearer in those quiet days. When the world felt bleak, the support I received from our community felt like a beacon, lighting the way forward.
From a response to a local need, and a reaction to the weight of a global crisis, something beautiful was born. A dream, a collective, a name that would symbolize not just the work we do, but the light we wish to bring into the world. Thus, the MC Art Collective came to life—a shining testament to the power of creativity and community.
Here, we believe that art is a birthright, not a privilege. We believe every young artist deserves space to create, to express, and to be seen. The MC Art Collective isn’t just about making art—it’s about weaving a community where creativity blooms, where we lift one another up, and where the journey is as beautiful as the destination. This is only the beginning. With every brushstroke, every note, every word, we’re lighting a path for the generations to come.
